Werner Riedel, Chief Scientist Defence at the Fraunhofer Institute for High-Speed Dynamics EMI, has received the prestigious Norman Jones Award.

The award is considered an outstanding honor, and it is selected among the leading international scientists in the field and is awarded every other year. It honors Riedel's 25 years of research in numerical simulation and physics-based modelling of protective structures.

The focus here is on highly dynamic load scenarios such as explosions or impacts on reinforced concrete structures. One of his key contributions was the RHT concrete model he developed, which is used by scientists and engineers worldwide in simulation software.

The award ceremony took place during the 7th International Conference on Protective Structures (ICPS7) in Abu Dhabi. Professor Riedel was also the keynote speaker for the opening lecture.

In addition to his research at Fraunhofer EMI, Riedel teaches ‘Protection of Structural Infrastructures’ at Furtwangen University and is a visiting professor at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore at the Protective Technology Research Center.

Riedel is recognized as a distinguished expert in the field of civil and military security research.
