Anticipating extreme weather

Software for assessing climate resilience

The “Building Resilience Calculator”  calculates measures to increase resilience.

April, 2026. Extreme weather is increasingly affecting cities, communities, and businesses. Floods, storms, or hail are occurring more frequently and with greater intensity—posing growing risks to buildings, infrastructure, and people.

To visualize the consequences of such hazards early on, Fraunhofer EMI has developed the “Building Resilience Calculator.”

The simulation software helps real estate companies, insurance providers, and building and urban planners to systematically assess the resilience of buildings against extreme weather. It analyzes potential damage and downtime that could result from events such as floods or storms, as well as the resulting costs.

The software is suitable for various building types—from multi-story administrative and office buildings to industrial facilities and residential buildings. Based on the simulations, it identifies potential vulnerabilities and derives concrete, costeffective measures from them. This provides users with a solid foundation for strategic decisions in risk management and investments in prevention.

The “Building Resilience Calculator” is accessible via a web platform with interactive demonstrations. API-based licensing also enables flexible integration into existing planning and decisionmaking processes.

The goal is to identify potential damage and operational disruptions early on, reduce risks, and avoid costs in the long term.

Flooding causes millions of dollars in damage every year. Due to climate change, these events are expected to become even more frequent.
