Over the past few decades, Fraunhofer EMI has faced spatial and structural constraints in its current facilities. By acquiring property and planning the construction of the KTC (High-Speed Dynamic Technologies Center ), the institute is making a strategic investment in its future viability.

The Fraunhofer Institute for High-Speed Dynamics EMI is expanding its research in Freiburg. The institute, which operates in military and civilian security research, recently acquired a property in the Areal Nord – Green Industry Park. The seller of the approximately 28,000 square meter area is Freiburg-S-Wirtschaftsimmobilien GmbH & Co. KG (FWI). The plot is being financed with funds from the Federal Ministry of Defence (BMVg)

A center for high-speed dynamic technologies is being planned, featuring state-fof-the-art laboratories and workspaces. The goal is to ensure the long-term continuation of research at the Freiburg branch. Additionally, the new facitlity aims to consolidate employees who are currently dispersed across rented office spaces due to spatial limitations. EMI’s Director Professor Dr.-Ing. Stefan Hiermaier explains: 'In recent decades, the institute has reached spatial and structural limits within its existing buildings. To ensure the institute's future viability, it is crucial to provide the modern research infrastructure needed now in suitable spaces.

The new facility is a significant step into EMI’s future, allowing researchers to maintain top-tier research in Freiburg while also creating opportunities for the expansion of research activities.

The project is currently in its initial phase. Preliminary planning is underway, and preparations for the tender are in progress."

Mayor Martin Horn: “The construction of the KTC by Fraunhofer EMI is a significant development for Freiburg as an attractive location for research and development. With approximately 2,700 employees and a total of five institutes, Freiburg is one of the largest Fraunhofer sites in Germany.”

Deputy Chair of the Board of Sparkasse Freiburg-Nördlicher Breisgau and member of the FWI Supervisory Board, Bernd Rigl: “The investment of federal funds in the Fraunhofer EMI project demonstrates that Freiburg is recognized as a reliable and forward-looking partner, extending beyond the region.”

Managing Director of FWTM and member of the FWI Supervisory Board, Jens Mohrmann: “The construction of the KTC in the science city Freiburg creates another powerful link between cutting-edge research and its wide-ranging applications.”

The successful establishment of Fraunhofer EMI is a key component in the overall development of the Areal Nord. It reaffirms our commitment to developing the new life science location in the Green Industry Park Freiburg with high quality and a clear focus on the future,' says Stephan Schoeller, Managing Director of FWI, who has been involved in the transaction."
